Mīļā draudze!

Apustulis Pāvils savā vēstulē Tesaloniķiešim raksta: Mēs, brāļi, kādu laiku esam jutušies bez jums kā bāriņi: lai gan bijām šķirti tikai ārīgi, ne savās sirdīs! To pašu šodien saku jums, visiem–brāļiem un māsām! Kopš marta sākuma neesam bijuši kopā un jūs man ļoti pietrūkstat!

Sarma Eglīte (LELBA liturģijas nozares vadītāja) aicināja ierakstīt Klusās nedēļas dievkalpojumus–katram no LELBA apgabaliem vienu–ko tad izsūtītu visām draudzēm. Angļu valodā ir izteiciens „it takes a village”–mēs varētu teikt–ir vajadzīga draudze!

Daira

Dear friends,

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Thessalonians writes: Brothers and sisters, for a short time we were made orphans by being separated from you — in person, not in heart. Today I’m borrowing his words to write to you-brothers, sisters, dearest friends! Since the beginning of March we haven’t been able to gather together–and I miss you all so very much. And yet–even though we are „distanced” in person, as Paul notes, we are together in heart and in spirit. Being distanced has helped us to realize how much we need one another. And so today, I give thanks to God for each and every one of you–individually and all together–who make up our community of faith, united in Christian love.

During this „orphan” time, the work of the church has encountered some problems (that our congregation president, Jānis Šulcs writes about in this newsletter)–but it is still going on. Just, in a different way. Our Worship services have moved to the internet. It’s not what we’re used to and it’s not ideal, but for this time, it’s a way to be together and worship together.

Since Easter, we have been moving along this „new way” (and it is new, for me!) thanks to the many, many people who have stepped up to help. To participate by reading Scripture: Jānis Šulcs, Dr. Inese and Ēriks Raisters, the whole Pružinskis family–Lisa, Andris, Krišjānis and Jūlijs, Dita Kanapinska and Dr. Jānis Sīpols. In the next few weeks we will be seeing and hearing the Šulcs family – Jānis, Linda, Larisa and Aina, as well as Vaira Christopher, Janīna Janšēvics, and Inta Wiest. It „takes a village” –or maybe we could say, it takes a congregation!

Then, there is our „video team” that meets each and every Monday to put together next Sunday’s Worship service: our organist Dr. Andris Āboliņš, and Pauls Zommers who films the service on his iPhone – patiently guiding the rest of us who don’t know what we’re doing and making us look and sound almost professional! Then, Andrejs Zommers takes the video and places it on the internet and Ēriks Raisters sends us the link, so we can all watch.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to each and every one. With „one heart and one spirit” you have made our video Worship services possible. Thanks be to God for you!

And, dear friends, also for you – who „attend” our distanced Worship services – distanced but/and also together. In God’s love.

Blessings, prāv. Daira

Dear friends,

Our video Worship service for the seventh and last week of Easter time is in Latvian.  Next week, on Pentecost Sunday, our Archbishop Lauma Zušēvica is preparing a service that will be sent to Latvian Lutheran churches all over the world.

In the weeks after Pentecost, since we don’t yet know when we will safely be able to gather in church, we will continue to make and send out our virtual Worship services. On Trinity Sunday, June 7, we will have both a Latvian and English version.

A resounding THANKS to our faithful „video team”: organist Dr. Andris Āboliņš, Pauls Zommers, who makes our videos, Andrejs Zommers, who puts them on our web page, and Ēriks Raisters, who sends them out to all of us!

Thanks also for you — dear friends!   Even though physically distanced, we can be together in God’s presence and pray for His guidance and blessing.  And so — and always — thanks be to God!

Blessings — prāv. Daira

Dear friends,

As you probably know, Latvians celebrate this day as Family Day.  This is why we have two videos today — one in Latvian, the other in English–we wanted to include all of our church family!   And so, with these virtual flowers and a virtual „hug” I wish you, each and every one — HAPPY FAMILY DAY!

Special thanks today to Pauls Zommers, who had twice the work to edit our Worship services — and to the Pružinskis family, Lisa, Andris, Krišjānis and Jūlijs, who helped lead them today.  As always — huge thanks to our amazing organist, Dr. Andris Āboliņš.

You can find all our Worship videos here on this website and on YouTube — thanks to Andrejs Zommers.

Daira

Dear friends,

Since at this time it’s not possible to gather for worship in church, we offer you this video that you can watch while sheltering in place in your home. This first video is in Latvian — next week it will be in English. We plan to keep making these videos until we can safely gather in church once more.

A hearty THANKS to Dr. Andris Āboliņš for his organ improvisations that “lift our heart unto the Lord.” Thanks as well to those who are helping us make the videos and post them on the Internet so we can watch.

May the Good Lord bless and keep us!

Mīļā draudze!

Uzklausot Vašingtonas gubernātora Inslee rīkojumu šajā krīzes laikā uzturēties mājās, visi aprīļa mēneša—tai skaitā Klusās nedēļas un Lieldienu dievkalpojumi—tiek atcelti.

Kristīgā mīlēstībā saudzēsim cits cita veselību līdz varēsim atkal droši sanākt kopā mūsu mīļajā dievnamā!

Seatles draudzes valde un prāv. Daira

In compliance with Gov. Inslee’s „shelter in place” order, all Worship services for April—including Holy Week and Easter—are canceled.

In Christian love let us observe distancing from one another until we can safely gather to worship together once more.   Seattle Latvian Church Council and  Pastor Daira

The Latvian Church and Center was designed and built for our community in 1971 by the hands of our hardworking and talented community members. The purpose was clear: Latvians needed a place for worship and a place to not only mark life’s milestones, but also share our cultural traditions and pass them along to our children and grandchildren. We have been married there, baptized and sent our children to Latvian school there, celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, confirmations, and the lives of our loved ones who have passed.

The Center has fostered Latvian culture through music, dance, theater, education and food all under one roof. It is in this spirit that we write to you to ask for your help. That very roof under which all these activities take place needs to be replaced. The roof was last replaced more than 25 years ago, but water damage over the last few years has seriously weakened its structure and it can no longer be safely repaired or patched. The roof must be fully replaced. Due to the size of the building and the challenging steep angle of the Church portion of the roof, the estimated cost is $100,000.

After finalizing an agreement this past year with Sound Transit, our facilities are no longer in jeopardy from light rail. While the transit settlement did provide significant funds, the majority of those funds will be needed for impacts and renovations caused by light rail construction. We must safeguard our Center from the elements now.

In 2018, the Church and Center were used more than 250 times by Latvians and other community groups close to us, including a very special celebration to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Latvian Republic! To continue using the facility with this frequency, without any disruption of services and events, we must replace the roof this year. We must commit to a contract no later than the beginning of June and schedule the replacement work for this summer or early fall.

We are asking you to please join us in funding a new roof for the Latvian Church and Center by making a generous contribution by May 31, 2020. We ask individuals to consider a gift of $300 and families consider a gift of $1,000. Of course, your donation in any amount is greatly appreciated.

We will post fundraising updates on the church web page, www.SeattleLatvianChurch.org, as well as the Latvian Church Center Facebook page. Checks may be written to the Seattle Latvian Church, with a notation of roof replacement. Donations are tax deductible. Thank you for your support!

Jānis Šulcs, Chairman of the Board
Seattle Latvian Lutheran Church

Ed Leitis
Latvian Center Manager

Sarmīte Davidson, President
Latvian Assoc. of the State of Washington

P.S. A special thank you to those six families who have already contributed $9,000!
