Pēdējā nedēļā mēs esam piedzīvojuši gan brāzmainus vējus un lietu, gan skaisti saulainas dienas – kā dabā, tā arī pasaules notikumos. Turpināsim cits citu turēt lūgšanās – vai kā mūsu Quaker draugi saka, turēt cits citu Dieva gaismā!

The prayer in this week’s worship service was written by Pastor Egils Grīslis (in 1976) in both Latvian and English. I’d like to share the English version with you:
Almighty God, teach me to be silent – that I may listen to Thee.
Deliver me from the empty sounds of this world, that I may not succumb to noisy claims, worthless words, small thoughts, loud slogans, shallow invitations, the useless crumbs and discarded fragments of life.
Fill me with Thy sacred silence,
Refresh, strengthen, and uphold me near Thee; that I may hear in silence, see in darkness and believe in the midst of ordinary life.
God, all merciful, help me to hope in the power of Thy eternal love.
Christ, Redeemer,
Forgive – that I may seek to forgive; embrace – that I may be able to embrace; encourage – that I may want to smile; console – that I may be able to give support; strengthen – that I can gain hope; bless – that I may search for love; save – that I may forever remain with Thee.
Christ, Savior, abide with me – that I may remain faithful to Thee. Lay on Thy hands, warm the heart, enflame the soul, unite in faith, hope and love!

Mīļā draudze!
Pirmdienā, kad ierakstījām Zvaigznes dienas svētbrīdi vēl nebija izcēlušies nemieri par kuriem esam noraizējušies. Tieši tajā dienā, 6. janvārī, prāv. Gunārs Lazdiņš izsūtīja visām LELBA draudzēm šo vēstuli:
Mīļās māsas un brāļi Kristū!
Šodien mūsu valsts piedzīvo satraukumu par notikumiem mūsu Valsts galvas pilsētā.
Zvaigznes dienā evaņģēlists Jānis raksta: “Es esmu pasaules Gaisma, kas seko man, tas patiesi nestaigās tumsībā, bet tam būs dzīvības gaisma.” Nepadosimies tumsībai – mūsu ceļš ir gaismas ceļš. Aicinu vienoties lūgšanās, lai atgūtu mieru un pārliecību, ka DIEVAM ir pēdējais vārds.
Uzklausot prāv. Gunāru—lūgsim arī mēs. Par mieru, kas ir augstāks par mūsu saprašanu un par Gaismu, kurā mēs visi—kopīgi—varam staigāt.

He reminds us of the words of John’s Gospel: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Mīļā draudze – Dear friends,
This, our first video of 2021 comes to you with many good wishes for the New Year. May the Good Lord bless and keep you – and may His light lead you in ways of gladness and peace. I hope and pray that at some time—sooner rather than later—we will once more be able to come together for worship in our church, but—in the meantime, we will continue to send worship videos, thanks to our faithful video team: Pauls Zommers, Andrejs Zommers and Ēriks Raisters. Daina Kusins was the reader for today’s service and Dr. Andris Āboliņš provided not only music, but also the flowers—the poinsettias on the altar and the roses by the wreath.

May your Christmas be joyous and bright with the light that the Christ Child brings into this world and into our lives.
Our video worship service is in both Latvian and English. Thank-you to our Scripture readers Andrejs and Tālis Zommers. For this service our organist Dr. Andris Āboliņš was joined by Laila Zommers on her violin. Katriāna Zommers wasn’t able to come home for Christmas, but she sent us two songs from her home in New York. To all our musicians, near and far—Thank-you and Paldies!
Since we weren’t able to have our Candlelight service this year, we asked the Latvian school families to send some pictures of the children for the video. Latvian school is meeting on Zoom, thanks to dedicated teachers, hardworking children and patient parents! We wish them well. Paldies to those, who sent the pictures you will see at the end of the video.
As always—to Pauls Zommers and Andrejs Zommers and Ēriks Raisters—thank-you and thank-you and thank-you again for all you do!
A final note—as we were filming this worship service on Monday evening it started to snow. See if you can catch a glimpse of some snowflakes mixed with the raindrops in the exterior shots of the church. It was a kind of blessing for this difficult year!

It has become a tradition to give a name to each of the four candles in the Advent wreath–hope on the first Sunday, then faith, followed by joy and peace. This is light for our time of waiting, of longing. Each week the days get shorter, the nights get longer–but we light another candle. And wait–for the One who is promised. God’s own Light come down to us.

Happy Advent! Yes, already! It’s time to light the candles in our Advent wreath–and start preparing ourselves to receive God’s blessed Christmas gift of his Son.
As you will see in the video–we have a Christmas tree–already. Pauls Kalniņš bought it and brought it to the church– Mārtiņš Cilnis and Juris Cilnis put it up–Selga Pētersons and Nicole Pētersons decorated it with lights. As they say–it takes a village! Thanks-to all of you! It’s lovely!
